Directionless Times and the Question of History
On 29-31 August 2025, the 1st Vilnius Convention in Historical Theory brought together a small group of scholars to discuss “Directionless Times and the Question of History.” The event, organized by the Lithuanian Institute of History, was the first iteration of a series of events dedicated to addressing pressing history-related topics in settings that allow for focused discussions, with its topics and twelve invited participants rotating annually.
To preserve the spirit of the event and ensure that it would not fade into a mere sequence of dates and names, we chose to move beyond conventional documentation. Rather than recounting the conference through formal summaries or transcripts, we tell its story through the eyes of an observer: someone who stood slightly apart, quietly watching, and capturing the unfolding moments not in words alone, but in drawings. Each page of the comic becomes both record and interpretation, where observation turns into storytelling – not about the presentations and the participants themselves but about their ideas on directionless times and history.
